We decided to go away this year for our anniversary and take advantage of the free babysitting by Harper's Grammy and Grandad! We left Wednesday night for Dubai, UAE and returned on Friday night. I think Dubai is typically a tourist destination for people who want a taste of the Middle East (camel rides, desert landscape, Mosques, calls to prayer), but for us it was like getting a taste of the West J. Men, women (both covered and not), and children were out having fun together…even in the pool. We saw everything from speedos and string bikinis, to women fully coved in black swim abayas!! We stayed at the Atlantis Resort. It's owned by the same people who own the Atlantis in the Bahamas. It was SO nice. The inside was decorated with tile mosaics and Chihuly glass sculptures. They have an amazing aquarium with a young whale shark!!
There was a water park attached to the hotel, and it was free for hotel guests!! The park was centered around a lazy river ride. It was awesome!!! You could ride rapids and torrents, go down winding tubular slides, or just float around the park without ever having to leave your inner tube!
The hotel had an awesome pool, too. The hotel itself was located on the tip of the crescent in the man made Palm Jemeirah islands. One side overlooked the Arabian Gulf and the other overlooked the man made bay with downtown Dubai in the background. It was kind of hazy, but we could even see the famous Burj al Arab, the world's only 7 star hotel. I think you can stay at the hotel for a mere $900.00 a night!!!! Apparently if you are staying at the Burj al Arab, you are picked up from the airport either in a Rolls Royce or a helicopter, your choice, and taken to the hotel. We saw a Rolls Royce at the airport picking someone up…it wasn't us.
(we didn't take this picture, just found it here)
Here's our view of the Burj
Here is the view of and from the hotel's pool…
After spending most of our time at the hotel and in the water park, we went to the Mall of the Emirates and tried out the indoor ski slope! It was so cool…literally. I think they cooled the building down to -2 degrees Celsius! It was so cool stepping from the 120 degree heat into a place where we could see out breath. Ski Dubai gave you everything you needed to ski, except for gloves and a hat, so we brought our own. We skied for about 2 hours and then headed to the airport.
It was an awesome weekend! We missed Harper like crazy but had a wonderful time just being together.
